LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

STAR LETTER: OILY BUSINESS

Hello to all at Corporate Watch,

I'd just like to make a suggestion to one of the letters sent in by Linda Milo about Bertolli olive oil ('Mama Mia'). Unfortunately I do not know much about the ethical standards of Bertolli Oil. However, there is a fair trade women's co-op in Palestine who specialise in the production of olive oil and have a range of related products that they export to the UK, and maybe she could consider switching to buying their product. Their website is here: www.sindyanna.com

Not only will her money not be supporting a greedy corporation, but she will be supporting people through difficult times by purchasing an excellent product of high quality. There are a few distributors in the UK.

All the best,
Vanessa Seeyave (via email)

Thanks Vanessa, but to be fair to other small companies involved in distributing Fairtrade Palestinian olive oil there's also UK-based Zaytoun cooperative (www.zaytoun.org) and Californian company Holy Land Olive Oil (www.palestineoliveoil.org)

COAL MINING IN COLOMBIA

Dear Corporate Watch,
Thanks for the last issue on mining and extraction (PRECIOUS THINGS). I didn't know if your readers were aware of the current mining project in Columbia?

The Cerrejón coal company are involved in a project that is currently responsible for the displacement of indigenous people, the destruction of the local environment and basically for making the land inhospitable.

There are Colombian grassroots groups and international solidarity campaigns trying to raise awareness of this project. See the Colombian Solidarity Campaign and Mining and Communities websites for more information: www.colombiasolidarity.org.uk and www.minesandcommunities.org

Andrew Pickles, Lancaster

Cheers for the info, also Cerrejón Coal Company are 33.3% owned by the world's largest mining company BhPBilliton, and also part-owned by mining giant AngloAmerican and Swiss company Xstrata.
