| Why animal feed companies Animal feed manufacturers provide a lifeline to the agri-biotech companies such as AgrEvo and Monsanto who are forcing unwanted genetically modified (GM) crops onto farmers and the public. Over half of all GM crops grown in the world are fed to animals [1]. All of the companies in this briefing use GM ingredients in their products. They continue to use them even though the effects of this on livestock and on people who eat the meat and dairy products that come from them is unknown. This is particularly disturbing in light of the recent food scares associated with animal feed, such as the BSE crisis, the Belgian dioxin contamination crisis and recent reports that French livestock have been fed sewage sludge. Through pressure from activists, campaigners and consumers, human food manufacturers have been forced to use only identity preserved (non-GM) ingredients. There is currently very little incentive for animal feed manufacturers to follow their example. If campaigners can persuade these companies to eliminate GM crops from their products they will be robbing the agri-biotech companies of one of their largest sources of income in the UK. For more information about this see the briefing 'Introduction and Strategic Overview' (details on back page). The animal feed industry |
