| Genetix RoundUp Thailand last week followed the Philippines in banning GM crop trials and research, as well as any future commercial growing. On 30th March activists from the Genetic Enginering Network set up a foot and mouth disinfectant trap outside the DETR biotech unit at Alexandra House in central London, in an attempt to remind officials of the current FMD outbreak. (their current policy of allowing GM farmscale trials to continue and letting biotech scientists wander the countryside unattended seemed to suggest theyd forgotten). A letter signed by a number of farmers, calling for farm-scale trials to be postponed until the current FMD outbreak is under control, was handed over to a DETR biotech unit official and the response from staff and passers-by was positive. News has leaked out that NFU Mutual, the farmers insurance firm of choice, is refusing to give cover against damage to GM crop trials. Presumably they think GMs a bad risk All the new trial site locations have now been announced and will be up on www.gm-info.org.uk in the next few weeks. |
