It’s unlikely to be much comfort to farmers watching their animals burn, but anti-corporate campaigners had a quiet laugh last week at the news that not only burgermeisters McDollars but also the Nike trainer monster are likely to suffer a drop in profits over coming months. Apparently, the mass slaughter and burning of diseased cattle has been putting people off their burgers, to the extent that the McMonster has seen first-quarter profits fall by 16%. Not only that, but burning dead cattle means you can’t use their hides – so the price of leather has gone up and Nike stands to lose millions through increased costs. All together now, ‘Ahhhhhhh! Poor things!’.
