FUNKY TACTIX

A new section dedicated to fresh tactical developments: those creative methods that do the business to the businesses. Imagination being the precious commodity the corporate bankers don’t have, we will use this as a space to bounce around new ideas. We also present DARK MOVES, new tactics from the dark side.

TOP PROPS
Our first mention has to be to the Agitprops Group, busily crafting such invaluable protest items such as a ten-foot grim reaper, aliens, and, bless their GM free cotton socks, a bullshit machine. These and other spectacular creations are to be sported nationwide in battles with Babylon, so keep your eyes open and your ears down for the emergence of Agitprops, propmakers of distinction.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
The Funky Tactix TOP TIP TITLE for this issue, however, must go to Amnesty International for their new ‘Who’s Your Neighbour’ scheme.

Closely followed by the ‘Director Of The Day’ approach being used in the USA against UNOCAL, both methods involve helping people become better known in their local community, especially if they have something to hide. Home is where the heart is after all.

Amnesty held an exhibition in the town hall of a Scottish town where torture weapons are being manufactured. On display were pictures, descriptions and examples of the weapons produced, and also testimonies from victims of those products. Also included was a map showing the location of the inconspicuous red building wherein those products were being made. The townsfolk were mighty interested to discover this.

Similarly, in the ‘Director Of The Day’ approach, concerned activists are highlighting the accomplishments of their chosen director by helping their local communities to be aware of what they do. From the local school board to the book club to the garden fete committee; any local organisation that the businessman is involved with, receives information on their corporate activities and the resulting social and environmental impacts. Let’s all get to know each other a bit better, huh?

DARK MOVES -TROJAN HORSE TREACHERY
The Dark Moves ‘method of the month’ must go to Lloyds bank on J18. Lloyds are one of the major bankers for BAe., and CAAT thought it was about time that the faceless financiers were shown that they hadn’t been forgotten.

However protesters were pleasantly surprised to be served with a generous supply of tea whilst stopping business at the city branch. It seemed a very polite response, however the bank’s sinister motives became apparent when protesters found the doors to the customers toilets had been locked in the hope that this would force them away. Not to be outdone, of course, the protesters steadfastly filled up a few empty water bottles.

So folks, beware this new ploy - Pissing Off Protesters, and remember to return their kind gestures; just leave your bottle as a momento. After all, ‘tis better to give than to receive…

If you have heard of any new manoeuvres, to share or be aware of - effective and stylish, or operational information from the other side, please let us know. Mark letters or leave messages for: Funky Tactix.

While willing to spend billions on "humanitarian" military operations like the Kosovo bombing campaign, the US is far less enthusiastic about providing monetary support for UN peacekeeping operations. The Boston Globe reports that the US has requested the UN cut some of the projected costs of its peacekeeping operation in East Timor by reducing the occupying force from 8,950 troops down to 8,000. UN member states are already $2.15 billion behind in peacekeeping dues. The US owes the UN $1.7 billion in back dues of all kinds.- Boston Globe
