| Photo: Surfrider Foundation, courtesy of Corporate Watch US Free market solutions do little to stop energy corporations continuing 'business as usual'. Yet just 122 corporations account for 80% of all carbon dioxide emissions. Chevron Corporation's El Segundo plant is a top supplier in Los Angeles - the largest gasoline market in the world. It provides the fuel for many of the nearly 8 million cars that career daily through LA's maze of freeways, as well as for planes at the LA airport. The refinery also spews thousands of gallons of effluent into the ocean on a daily basis. When its air, water and land emissions are taken together, Chevron's El Segundo refinery is one of the largest single sources of pollution in the greater Los Angeles area. Yet, in the neighborhood that borders the refinery, the American Dream reels onward, nearly oblivious to the nightmare that has infiltrated its core. |
