Land Grabs

Land Grabs

Vast swathes of land across the global south are being bought up or leased by companies seeking to turn a profit or by governments protecting their access to food or energy sources. Land grabbing often has a devastating impact on local populations, displacing farmers and destabilising rural communities.

As well as speculation on food and land value, the growing biofuels and carbon markets are also driving the increase in land grabs. Despite being sold as 'solutions' to climate change, biofuels and carbon offsetting schemes usually result in increased emissions and act as distractions from addressing systemic causes.
