The coalition government’s education reforms have so far managed to avoid the same level of scrutiny that the health reforms have been subjected to, but they too have far-reaching consequences. To find out more, Corporate Watch went to the National Union of Teachers (NUT) conference in Harrogate last month to speak to teachers about the practical effects of the reforms and any alternatives they may have.
1. ‘No calling more noble’
Four experienced teachers discuss the perpetual attempts to reform education by successive governments since the 1980s and the counter-productive pressure that this has put on teachers and students.
2. ‘A big for sale sign outside your school’
Four young teachers discuss academies and free schools, the impact of the cuts on their teaching and the attempts of the coalition government to improve the quality of teachers.
3. ‘Decide your principles first’
In a shorter, late-night discussion, five teachers share their ideas on what teaching should be like and discuss the reforms they would like to see introduced.
