NEWS IN BRIEF February 28, 2008

PLANKTOS FORCED TO DUMP SCHEME
The corporation Planktos has cancelled its plans for a highly risky 'carbon sequestration' project. As previously reported in Corporate Watch news, Planktos was planning to dump 50-100 tonnes of iron ore in a large area of ocean, 320 km west of the Galapagos Islands, in order to experiment with growing carbon-soaking plankton. This highly irresponsible (but potentially also highly lucrative) scheme has been shelved. As a Planktos press release sourly relates, 'A highly effective disinformation campaign waged by anti-offset crusaders has provoked widespread opposition to plankton restoration in the environmental world, and has caused the company to encounter serious difficulty in raising the capital needed to fund its planned series of ocean research trials.'

IN THE JAWS OF THE CROCODYL
A new database of corporate profiles has been started by groups in the US. Crocodyl is an open project aimed at developing publicly-available profiles of the world's most powerful corporations. Based on the wiki system, anyone can get involved. The founding groups: CorpWatch, the Centre for Corporate Policy and the Corporate Research Project all have long track records in corporate-critical research. See more at www.crocodyl.org/
