LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

STAR LETTER: PARASITES PROTEST

Hi Loukas

Well, Corporate Watch is normally a welcome arrival here, but this one was grossly offensive to cockroaches etc. How dare you!

Jim
(pp CCCIEALFW - Cockroaches, Creepy-Crawlies, Insects and Estate Agents (oops!) Liberation Front of Whitechapel)

An apology: Corporate Watch would like to express its deep sorrow at any hurt caused to the creeping/crawling and parasitical animal/insect communities by the last issue (June-July 2006, Public Private Parasites). Worms, ants and dung beetles all have their place in the scheme of things and are often vital for the ecology of an area. It was truly offensice to compare them to the totally useless private contractors covered in the last newsletter.

LACK OF CLARITY?

Hello

I don't understand why Corporate Watch don't appear to have any information concering the Clearstream scandal (the clearing arm of Deutsche Borse), particularly as it is accused of being the platform for money laundering operations by various companies and individuals running into the billions. Many companies ranging from Barclays to Shell are alleged to hold accounts with Clearstream. Apparently some consider Clearstream the reason why the London Stock Exchange did not entertain Deutsche Borse's takeover bid. The Argentinian funds that left the country following the economic collapse of 2001/2002 are also alleged to have gone through Clearstream thanks to Citibank. The growing number of law suits in the European parliament owing to this defy comprehension. See wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clearstream) for more.

Thanks for bringing this company to our attention, Tamara. Unfortunately we can't profile or report on as many companies as we would like. One solution to this is to make company profiles self-writing. Sourcewatch and Nuclearspin both use the 'wiki' form of website, by which readers can add and edit information, to major databases of company profiles. See www.sourcewatch.org and www.nuclearspin.org

STARBUCKS AT WAR

Thank you for the informative article on Starbucks. I have always been doubtful about their so-called fair trade approach and claims of social and environmental responsibility. Something that I did not see in the article, and would like to point out, is that that they also have a cafe in Guantanamo Bay and are proud to supply quality coffee and a place for for relaxation for the US servicemen and women (who may get tired of torturing prisoners.). See UK Indymedia/New Statesman.

Good luck with the rest of your work

DUMPING THE DEALERS

Hi Corporate Watch,

I've been a fan of your work for some time. I noticed your article from 7 September 2005 about Reed-Elsevier and I thought you may be interested in an academic boycott of Reed-Elsevier which is currently being organised by me and some folk from Campaign Against the Arms Trade.

Reed Elsevier publish many academic journals - and also organise arms fairs. In response to this state of affairs a small but growing number of academics have taken it upon themselves to protest the activities of Reed-Elsevier through a boycott of their journals. They have pledged to cease submitting to Reed-Elsevier journals until Reed-Elsevier stop organising arms fairs. More details are at http://cage.ugent.be/~npg/elsevier/

If you need more information from me please let me know.

Very best wishes,
Nick Gill

SUBVERTISE, R.I.P.

Hi, I bought your booklet What's wrong with supermarkets? at the Unicorn organic store in Chorlton, Manchester, a few days ago, and was eager to check out www.subvertise.org which you mention and show an image from. But having tried to download it it seems to have finished?......am I looking wrong, or if it has finished, what happened?

Hi Julian,

I think the person maintaining Subvertise.org had to pack it in due to lack of time. There are still some good sites dedicated to subverts, however, such as www.adbusters.org and also other places where people share similar images - such as some of the shots on this flickr pool www.flickr.com/groups/alteredsigns/pool/
