Controversial courier company sending millions offshore to owners

One of the UK's biggest delivery companies is sending millions of pounds to its owners through tax havens, while refusing couriers' demands for “decent” pay.

By analysing company accounts and other financial records, Corporate Watch has found CitySprint – which calls itself the leading same-day delivery service in the UK - has racked up £8.2m in interest on loans from the investment fund that bought the company in 2010. As the loans have been taken out through the Channel Islands Stock Exchange, a legal loophole means CitySprint's tax bills will be slashed while the interest on the loans can be sent to owners tax free.

Home Office told to publish confidential reports on migrant detention sites

The Information Commissioner has ordered the Home Office to disclose confidential self-audit reports written by the companies that ran two controversial immigration detention centres. The decision follows a ten month freedom of information battle by Corporate Watch.

The Commissioner slammed the Home Office for a series of delays and said there is “a very strong public interest” in disclosure. He said the reports contain “detailed breakdowns and insight” into the performance of Serco and the Geo Group on their multi-million pound government contracts for operating the Colnbrook and Harmondsworth facilities. The Home Office has to hand over the documents by 13 July 2015 or risk contempt of court. The Home Office can still appeal the Commissioner's decision.

'I personally feel they should be closed down': My MiHomecare experience

Brian Jones

Surrey resident Alison Jones describes the poor quality of care her father Brian received from MiHomecare in his final years.

When my dad got out of hospital in August 2013 after a variety of diabetes-related conditions he needed carers to come to his house in Caterham every morning and evening to help him wash, dress, prepare his food and take his medicine. He was 76 years old. The care was organised through MiHomecare.

Almost as soon as the carers started it was very clear that they did not have enough time to do their job. They did not seem to have enough time to travel between clients as they rarely turned up on time. This was important as dad was diabetic and needed his food and insulin at regular times.

One carer was very good. She lived nearby and on the days she came dad was very well cared for. On the other days it was hit and miss.

Shareholder activists target Barclays AGM

On Thursday 23 April 2015, several protests were held outside the gates of the Barclays Annual General Meeting at the Royal Festival Hall. Several activists bought shares and attended the AGM in order to ask questions.

Anti-militarist activists held a protest calling on Barclays to divest from the arms trade.

One activist read out an alternative chairman's speech to the queue of shareholders waiting to pass through security. He was roughly carried away from the entrance by Festival Hall security guards.

A press release from the Stop Barclays Coalition states: “Barclays is the named shareholder in several major arms firms including Raytheon, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin:

* Lockheed Martin is the world's largest arms company. Their products include Hellfire missiles, Apache attack which have been used in Iraq, and F-16 fighter aircraft which have been used by the Israeli military in attacks on Gaza.

Are £1-an-hour jobs legal?

As a hybrid of prison labour and sub-zero hours exploitation, the cheap work done by migrants in UK detention centres is open to challenge in the courts, one barrister argues.

Inside the walls of the UK’s 'Immigration Removal Centres', a regime of low-paid labour has seemingly cast detained migrants outside the protections of the law – while saving companies and the government hundreds of thousands of pounds in wages.

'It's gonna break': life in UK's biggest detention centre

Secret filming reveals conditions inside Harmondsworth immigration detention centre for the first time, where hundreds of people face deportation.

The footage was shot by a detainee and obtained by Corporate Watch as part of a five month investigation into Mitie, the outsourcing firm that took over Harmondsworth in September 2014 under a multi-million pound Home Office contract.

The videos, some of which are also featured on Channel 4 News tonight, reveal:

- Home Office staff admitting that conditions in Harmondsworth are “shit”, and that detainees are not allowed cameras to photograph inside the centre because the government “don't want the bad publicity that would entail”.

- A guard saying that the new Mitie management has “fucked this place up”, making staff work more shifts and get less rest. “It's just gonna break. There's only so much people can take”, the guard warns.

Greek debt: what they don't tell you

Over the past few weeks Alexander Stubb, Prime Minister of Finland, amongst others in Merkel's camp have been adamant that Greek debt cancellation is out of the question. Whether this proves true or not will depend on whether such statements fall within the realpolitik of the euro crisis management thus far: “When it becomes serious, you have to lie”, as current Commission president and former Eurogroup president Jean Claude Juncker explained to the public in May 2011.

Child detained for two months 'by mistake' at Mitie centre

Razor-wire-at-Campsfield-by-Stand-Off-Films

A child was locked up for 62 days “by mistake” at an immigration removal centre, a new report by the chief inspector of prisons released today reveals.

An inspection into the Campsfield centre in Oxfordshire, run by outsourcing giant Mitie, also found asylum seekers living in overcrowded and dirty accommodation, insufficient legal advice for detainees, and torture survivors held in violation of Home Office rules.

Despite these problems, Nick Hardwick, the chief inspector, said:

“Overall, this was a very positive inspection. Staff and managers at Campsfield House should be congratulated in dealing professionally and sensitively with detainees who were going through what, for many, was a difficult and unhappy time.”

Honeywell components used to bomb Gaza last Summer

Components manufactured by US firm Honeywell were used to bomb a Palestinian home during the Israeli attack on Gaza last Summer.

Photos taken by International Solidarity Movement activist, Charlie Andreasson, in Shujaiya on 9th August 2014, show damage to a Palestinian home close to where the components were found. One picture shows a component marked Honeywell, giving a postcode in Iowa. The damage can only have been caused by an aerial dropped bomb. The components were probably for a laser guided bomb system.

Tahir Mehmood inquest: Tascor guards give evidence

Medical staff at a Manchester Airport holding centre did not see paperwork warning them that a newly arrived detainee had complained to immigration officers about chest pains, an inquest heard yesterday.

Tahir Mehmood, a 43-year-old chef from Pakistan who had overstayed his visa, was detained at the Pennine House short-term holding facility at Manchester Airport on 20 July 2013. Six days later he died in custody. The UK Home Office has twice refused Mehmood’s widow a visa to attend the inquest, Manchester based human rights organisation RAPAR told Corporate Watch.
